First-Time Operation

Power on the machine using the power switch (if present) or by pressing the foot pedal. Begin with a practice stitch on scrap fabric.

  1. Select a straight stitch using the stitch selector dial.
  2. Set stitch length to medium (around 2.5) and width to 0 for a straight stitch.
  3. Place fabric under the presser foot, lower the presser foot lever, and gently press the foot pedal to start sewing.
  4. Practice controlling speed with the foot pedal and guiding the fabric.
  5. Use the reverse lever at the beginning and end of seams to lock stitches.
  6. Experiment with different stitch patterns and settings on scrap fabric.

CAUTION! Keep fingers away from the moving needle. Always turn the handwheel towards you (counter-clockwise) to manually move the needle.

Controls and Settings

Primary controls are located on the front and right side of the machine.

Stitch Selector Dial: Turn to choose the desired stitch pattern (icons correspond to stitches). Stitch Length Dial: Higher numbers = longer stitches. Stitch Width Dial: Adjusts side-to-side movement for zigzag and decorative stitches. Reverse Stitch Lever/Button: Hold down to sew backwards. Thread Tension Dial: Adjusts upper thread tension (usually set between 4-5 for balanced stitches). Presser Foot Lever: Raises and lowers the presser foot. Handwheel: Manually raises/lowers the needle. Turn towards you only. Bobbin Winder Spindle & Stop: Used to wind the bobbin. Power/Light Switch: On/Off control for machine and built-in light (on some models).

Basic Stitching Guide

Follow these steps for successful sewing.

  1. Threading: Raise presser foot and needle to highest position. Follow numbered threading path on machine. Use automatic needle threader if equipped.
  2. Bobbin: Wind bobbin evenly. Place bobbin in case with thread unwinding counter-clockwise. Pull thread through slot and under tension spring.
  3. Fabric Preparation: Use appropriate needle and thread for your fabric. Test settings on a scrap piece.
  4. Starting to Sew: Hold both thread tails behind presser foot. Lower presser foot. Press foot pedal gently to start. Guide fabric lightly; do not push or pull.
  5. Finishing a Seam: Use reverse stitch for 3-4 stitches to lock. Raise needle, raise presser foot, pull fabric back and cut threads with built-in cutter or scissors.
  6. Changing Stitches: Always stop with needle in the highest position before turning the stitch selector dial.

Tip: For best results, clean lint from bobbin area regularly and change needles after 8-10 hours of sewing or for each new project.

Advanced Functions

Utilizing special features for specific tasks.

  1. Buttonholes: Use the buttonhole foot. Mark buttonhole placement. Select the buttonhole stitch. Lower the buttonhole lever (if present). Sew one side, then the machine will automatically sew the other side and bar tacks.
  2. Zippers: Attach the zipper foot. Baste zipper tape in place. Adjust needle position (left/right) using stitch width dial or foot adjustment to sew close to the zipper teeth.
  3. Blind Hem: Use the blind hem foot and select the blind hem stitch. Fold fabric as instructed. The stitch will create nearly invisible hems on garments.
  4. Decorative Stitches: Select a decorative pattern. Use stabilizer underneath lightweight fabrics to prevent puckering. Experiment with different thread types.
  5. Darning/Free Motion: Lower or cover the feed dogs (if possible). Use the darning or embroidery foot. Move the fabric manually in any direction to create free-form stitching.

WARNING! When changing presser feet or needles, ensure the machine is turned off and unplugged to prevent accidental activation.

Maintenance & Cleaning

Regular maintenance ensures optimal performance and longevity.

  1. Daily Cleaning: Unplug machine. Remove needle plate screws and lift off plate. Use the small brush to remove lint from bobbin area and feed dogs. Replace needle plate.
  2. Oiling: Refer to manual for specific oiling points. Use only sewing machine oil. Apply 1-2 small drops as indicated, then run machine on scrap fabric to distribute oil.
  3. Needle Replacement: Loosen needle clamp screw, remove old needle. Insert new needle with flat side to the back, push up fully, and tighten screw firmly.
  4. Exterior Cleaning: Wipe with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use solvents or spray cleaners directly on the machine.

CAUTION! Never oil plastic parts or the bobbin case unless specified. Over-oiling can attract more lint and stain fabric.

Always follow these safety guidelines to prevent injury and damage.
